Many people who become addicted to alcohol or other drugs also struggle with depression, anxiety, or another mental health disorder. Clinicians use the term dual diagnosis to describe the simultaneous presence of a substance use disorder (addiction) and a mental health concern. Luxury dual diagnosis treatment centers allow adults to receive comprehensive addiction treatment and mental health care in a safe and comfortable environment.
What is Dual Diagnosis Treatment?
When a person has both a substance use disorder and a mental health concern, it is essential that their care addresses the full scope of their needs. Attempting to treat either the addiction or the mental health disorder without acknowledging the other condition is likely to undermine the person’s efforts to achieve improved health and long-term recovery.
Dual diagnosis treatment acknowledges the importance of providing effective care for addiction while also helping the patient learn to manage the symptoms of their mental health disorder. This comprehensive approach to treatment often includes prescription medication and several forms of therapy.
Dual diagnosis can be a complex challenge, and recovery can require considerable effort. But self-care, rest, and relaxation are also important for preserving or improving your mental health. Luxury dual diagnosis treatment centers can provide an optimal environment to support patients who are working so hard to achieve a better quality of life.
Signs and Symptoms You Need a Dual Diagnosis Treatment Center
The best way to determine if you need a dual diagnosis treatment center is to be assessed by a qualified healthcare provider. The following signs and symptoms may suggest that you should schedule an assessment:
- You find it difficult or impossible to get through the day without using alcohol or another drug.
- Once you start using substances, you are unable to control how much you use.
- When you can’t use substances, or when you try to reduce the amount you’ve been using, you experience physical and/or emotional distress.
- You continue to use substances even after they have caused problems for you at school, on the job, in your relationships, or in other important parts of your life.
- You have been using alcohol or another drug to self-medicate symptoms of anxiety, depression, or another mental health disorder.
- You have been experiencing drastic and unpredictable changes in mood, attitude, and energy.
- You are sleeping either way too much or hardly at all.
- You frequently feel exhausted, even if you have been getting an appropriate amount of sleep.
- Your appetite has changed, which has led to unintentional weight gain or loss.
- You have difficulty focusing, concentrating, and making decisions.
- You have become uncharacteristically forgetful or absent-minded.
- You find it difficult to experience happiness.
- You have lost interest in hobbies, sports, or other activities that used to be very important to you.
- You find yourself withdrawing from your family members and your close friends.
- You feel as though you are losing control of your thoughts and behaviors.
- You sometimes feel removed from your surroundings or even detached from your own thoughts and feelings.

Why Does a Co-Occurring Disorder Develop?
Whether a person first struggles with addiction or a mental health concern, developing a co-occurring disorder is not uncommon.
For example, if a person has been living with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), they may begin to abuse alcohol or another substance as a means of numbing their emotional pain. In another example, someone who has been fired from their job or lost an important relationship as a result of their untreated addiction may be at increased risk for depression.
There is rarely a clearly defined, cause/effect relationship between co-occurring addiction and mental illness. However, the following factors can increase a person’s likelihood for developing a co-occurring disorder:
- Family history of substance abuse and addiction
- Family history of mental illnesses
- Personal history of mental health concerns
- Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) or other forms of trauma
- Using a prescription medication to address a mental health concern, injury, or illness
- Exposure to elevated levels of stress or pressure
- Job loss, unemployment, and financial difficulties
- Having insufficient coping skills
- Genetic variations
Treatment Options for Dual Diagnosis Disorders
When people enroll in luxury dual diagnosis treatment centers, one of the first decisions often involves determining which level or levels of care are most appropriate. Depending on the nature and severity of the symptoms that a person has been experiencing, their care may be provided at one or more of the following levels:
- Detoxification
- Residential treatment
- Partial hospitalization program (PHP)
- Intensive outpatient program (IOP)
- Outpatient programming
Dual diagnosis treatment often requires a variety of therapies and support services. At luxury dual diagnosis treatment centers within the Creekside Recovery Network, a person’s care for addiction and a co-occurring mental health disorder may include the following:
- Individual and group therapy
- Family therapy sessions
- Medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
- Trauma-informed care
- Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy
- Reiki
- Music therapy
- Brainspotting therapy
- Red light therapy
Residential treatment typically features the widest array of therapies and support services. At the PHP and IOP levels, group therapy is often the main method of treatment, with other elements of care available on an as-needed basis. Outpatient rehab may consist of individual therapy, group therapy, or a combination of the two.
